About This Procedure

Upper eyelid surgery removes excess skin, and where appropriate a small amount of fat, from the upper lid. Patients typically describe a hooded appearance, difficulty applying makeup to a lid that no longer shows, eyes that look heavy in photographs, or in more pronounced cases skin resting on the lashes and interfering with the upper edge of their field of vision.

The question that determines whether this is the right operation is where the heaviness originates. Upper lid hooding and brow descent produce a similar appearance and are different problems. When the brow has dropped, the skin that gathers at the lid came from the forehead, and removing it at the lid lowers the brow further, which can leave a hollow, surprised or still-tired look.

A straightforward check at consultation separates the two: lifting the brow gently to its natural position shows how much of the apparent excess is lid skin and how much is brow. Where the brow is the primary cause, a brow lift addresses it, alone or combined with lid surgery.

Getting this distinction right is the difference between an eye that looks rested and one that has simply had skin removed. Individual results vary, and these photographs show one patient's outcome.
