The Mini Facelift with Big Results

Mini Facelift in Beverly Hills, CA

Facial muscles of movement are separated from the skin by a layer called the SMAS—superficial musculoaponeurotic system. This layer is a fibrous network composed of collagen, muscle, and connective tissue. As the SMAS layer descends over time, it brings the skin with it and this significantly contributes to signs of facial aging. The mini facelift reverses this process by addressing this laxity to provide a more youthful appearance. AAFPRS fellowship-trained, board-certified, facial plastic & reconstructive surgeon Dr. William Harris is an expert in the mini facelift technique and performs it at Harris Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics in Beverly Hills, California. He strives to deliver the best mini facelift Beverly Hills has to offer. Schedule your consultation right away to find out if a mini facelift is the best option for you.

What is a Mini Facelift?

Look Ten Years Younger

The jawline and neck are surgically improved with the mini facelift or rhytidectomy. This type of facelift helps reduce the appearance of jowls, double chins, sagging skin, extra fat, and other aging-related changes. By tightening this SMAS layer, eliminating fat, and reducing extra skin, a mini facelift minimizes the appearance of aging. As a result, most patients look and feel ten or more years younger than they actually are. The recovery or healing period is also shorter with a mini-facelift.

Discuss your goals for the look, healing, and expected recovery time with your plastic surgeon. It's critical to go into the procedure with reasonable expectations. You could benefit from a mini facelift if you are:

  • Interested in correction of vertical neck bands
  • Want to tighten mild to moderate laxity of the jawline and neck
  • Want a more substantial result than that achieved with dermal fillers and/or energy treatments
  • Not as concerned with aging of the midface

Your Mini Facelift Procedure

Minimal Incisions

Even though it is referred to as a "mini facelift", it is still a surgical procedure. The mini facelift is slightly different from the standard facelift in that it typically requires a shorter operative time somewhere in the range of 2-3 hours as well as less downtime. Following either general or local anesthesia, Dr. Harris will make a few tiny incisions in pre-marked areas near your ears and hairline.

Next, the underlying tissue is repositioned, and any excess skin and fat is removed. The incisions will then be meticulously closed and a bandage applied to reduce swelling. The mini facelift is an outpatient procedure and after about an hour or two of recovery time under careful observation, you can be discharged into the care of a family member or friend.

Stunning Results Await

You will wear a facial dressing typically for 24 hours after surgery before having this removed at your first post-surgery visit the following day. Expect to experience some degree of swelling, bruising, numbness, and soreness for several weeks. Typically, our Beverly Hills mini facelift patients can return to work, start exercising, and performing other regular activities within 2-3 weeks. The mini facelift will show the most notable improvement to the jawline and neck, but the nasolabial folds around the mouth and deep lines in the skin will also benefit. While the effects of aging will be greatly diminished or minimized with a mini facelift, they will eventually begin to return as you continue to age. Every patient experiences aging differently, but you can expect results to last 7-10 years.

Mini-Facelift Frequently Asked Questions

Traditionally, the average age of a facelift patient is over 60 years old. Lately, though, the procedure has grown in popularity among patients under 55 who want to look five or ten years younger instead of 20, as with full facelift patients. In 2017 almost one-quarter of the facelifts performed in the US were Mini Facelifts (29,259 out of 125,697 total).

Though the mini method isn’t as extensive as a full facelift, it is a major invasive surgical procedure, and there will be discomfort during your 2-3 week recovery. The level of discomfort is highly individualized. You will be given extensive post-operative instructions, which, when followed, will help alleviate pain.

Unfortunately, no facelift is permanent. Your procedure will help reverse the signs of aging, and your results should last 7-10 years, but the aging process will continue.

The incisions start in front of the ear, continue below the ear, and around to the hairline. They are less extensive than full facelift incisions. Incisions are well hidden in the hairline, and the scars will fade in about six months.

There has been a surge in adults under 55 having facelift surgery. Good candidates for the procedure are men and women in their forties to seventies.

Yes. You can combine it with other cosmetic procedures such as eyelid surgery, fat grafting, brow lift, injectables, microneedling, and laser treatments, to name a few.

There are alternative, non-invasive options to tighten skin, such as laser treatments, chemical peels, dermal fillers, ultrasound, and radiofrequency treatments, but you will see the most dramatic, long-term results with a surgical procedure.

Risks associated with surgery include anesthesia reactions, reactions to medications, scarring, bleeding, numbness, infection, and blood clots.

The cost of your mini facelift will vary based on individual anatomy and the extent of correction needed. During your consultation, Dr. Harris will sit down with you and discuss your individual goals as well as what procedure(s) may best benefit you before the cost of your procedure is determined.

The effects of aging in the jawline and neck are improved by the mini facelift and Deep Plane Face and Neck lift, respectively. The mini facelift is often best suited for individuals with minimal signs of face and neck aging, patients requiring reduced downtime, and those who may not be suited to undergo general anesthesia.
